In the debt of winter when I started to paint my flowers on paper collection, I invited local photographer, Victoria Danielle into my studio one morning. Magical film mixed with the morning light pouring into my studio gave way to these magical images she captured that day.
My studio, which is located inside of my home is a sacred space for me. It’s a place I escape to during nap time and when I have a flash of inspiration and paint and paintbrush must be put to paper. For this collection, I brought a variety of flowers into my home. Those flowers were carefully arranged in a vase, and they danced between my kitchen table and my studio. One of the many reasons I love having my studio in my home. For this collection, I drew Inspiration from a variety Of tablecloths both that I’ve owned and cherished and seen. Painting flowers was a theme that was born the year. I was pregnant with my third child. Each pregnancy I always leave space in time for inspiration to explore a new theme in my art practice. Much to my delight in 2023 when I found out I was pregnant with my third child. I knew it would be flowers. For years, I have explored what painting flowers might look like for me as an artist. It wasn’t until 2023 that I found my voice so clearly on painting that theme- In fact, it came gushing through like a river and it was almost like I couldn’t stop painting them. I was obsessed.
This is my third year in a row, exploring painting flowers And I have enjoyed exploring a few new flowers this year. My favorite part of painting flowers is painting them from real life. I like to sit with a flower and watch as it starts to droop and wilt and expire. No single flower looks alike yet each specific flower has a common pattern to it. Ie. The number of Petals, the shape of the stem or the leaf, the color and the best part of the flower is in between freshly picked and almost dead… That’s where the flowers personality really shines. And for me as an artist, that’s where the magic happens.
