Shade, Rest, Motherhood: exploring beachscapes through a slower season

There was something magical about moving my studio space this summer into our beloved boathouse that I can’t quite put my finger on… I am so excited to announce the release date of a new body of work, entitled “Onshore”. The title is a play on words of a mother’s perspective at the beach. When I first became a mother, I felt a bit stuck when I would go to the beach. As a self proclaimed beach rat my whole life, growing up in Florida, I would spend hours upon hours laying in the sunshine playing in the sand and swimming in the waves. However, when I became a mother, I had to shift both my perspective and my physical experience at the beach to accommodate my children’s preferences. As a mother to three young children, we are very often chasing the shade. I wanted to paint a body of work in response to how it felt to go to the beach as a mother with three young children during this season of my life. What came out of it was beachscapes full of big, beautiful umbrellas, where beach toys, beach bags, snacks, and seashells littered the shadows underneath. Chairs made their way Into the scenes as well, continuing to symbolize rest for me. I also explored painting a small series of women’s bodies, entitled summer bodies, as well as some still life paintings of beach toys.
